Κeys os World Oribalid sΛcari) Families and Gonerasi. Since the interest taken in this Work was the greatest hom the part os a carologists Working in theriolarctio Region, I have compiled another key, containing, howeVer, Onlythe Holarctic genera. By omitting the tropic and subtropic genera, it Waspossitile to construct Simpler keys than were the earlier Ones. In Order tofurther iacilitate identification work I also test o ut the families Dom the SeVeral keyS, preSenting the genera Within the supersa milies proper. Ad these alterations necessitated the complete recast Os the majority of keys as Submitted in my previous paper. Since I endeavoured to infert in the keys also genera described long ago, I tried to make use of the simplest characteristios, weli discernible also in a dorsoventral vlew. These seatures had namely been described or figured adequat ely even by a part os the earlier authors. Despitet his faci, Ι falled in including a number of genera in the keys. These genera arerelegated as ηgenera inquirenda si to the end Os the respective keys, and a1so designat ed by an asteristi in the catalogue. Let us hope that their number Will, by the critical Work of Oribatidologisis, Aho. a rapid decrease. Ι also triedio correct printers' errorS in the PreVious Paper, and to Substitute by newsigures Some Old Ones, haVing beco me obsolete in the meantime. On the Other hand, Ι was compelled to use the earlier and unsatisfactory figures is no Others

I should like to stress the taci that this paper affords only a limited possibility in the identification os Palearctic Oribatid genera. Hence, the

is made as follows: the shallow central hollow of the glide is half covered, so that the covering glasg covers the lest fide of the hollow. Then lactic acid is drawn in a capillary pipetie, and adros deposited in the uncovered, right Side of the hollow. Τhe covering glaSs must now. by the heis of the lest thumb, he pressed to the Alide, and both glightly titted to the lest in order that the lactic acid flow under the covering glass. Due to the essecis os capillarity, the lactic acidwill wholly get under the covering glass. Is it fatis to fili out completely the covered portion SO me more lactic acid must be ad ded by the pipette. Care Ahould he exercised that no lacticacid should get on the Alide proper, and that no excessive amounts Ahould re main in the un- Overed portion. Is such is the case, the Surpius lactic acid must be drawn up by the pipette. Now, in this fulled -up state, the Alide is ready. The Oribatid to he studied is caresully liste diso in the lactic acid, by the heis of a Dair of fine, sost pincers Or a brush, and then deposite din the center, and at the horder of the covered half, of the hollow in the Alide. Νow. by a very Sharp pin, whose iis is uiso Split in an L-8hape, or an extremely thin brugh, the mite must hemoved forward about 1 mm under the covering glass, and then pressed upwarils untii the animal geis Stightly stuck between the covering glass and the Alide. Now, either by the help of the pin Or a very subile and caresul horigontal shist in the position os the covering glass, the specimen is tirought into a guttable position. This process is made under a 10 to 40 binocular magnification. Thereaster the preparation is ready for any microscopic examination. Having finished the study, the Oribatid can he transferred into either 70-80ra alcohol or glycerine, sor thesinat preservation. Lactio acid, as a preserving medium is sultable Only to a limited extent for Oribailds, since, after longer periods, it will corrode the interarticulatory membrane, and the specimen will loose iis legs. The hairs may also tali Oiat. The method described above is superior in every respect to the permanent mounts method. The most important uduantages are: 1. the specimens will not get crushed, 2. theycan be studied DOm every direction, 3. lactio acid is a much helter optical medium than either the BERLΕsΕ-liquid Or PVA, 4. the method is much quicker than the permanent mount
