These gradu atly abate sor afew weelis, and as the period approaches again, come on, and so successively, sor a year Or tWo, Or more, terminating somelimes in large immo derate fluxes; somelimes in apoplexies, palsies, and other disse ases arising frona plenitude. that the patient has swelled ancies; and thathleeding Would inevitably, at that time of lise, bring on a dropsy. But is this fulta esse appears to be hard, in flamed, and patias ut, as is most commonly the case in s me degree, the lanceland sonae gentie laxative will scarcely fail of removing, instead of aggravating, the complaint;

and recourse may be had to the fame remedies, is the like complaintS reCUr. There is another circumstance osten happensat this period, s metimes oWing to the neglectos evacuations at a proper time, somelimes tothe use of improper medicines, sonaetimes to the peculiar constitution of the patient ; I mean animmoderate flux of the Menses, Whicli osten reis quires the ulmoso care in iis restraint and future

regulation.

For the most part this happens to Women os sanguine habiis, living well, accustomed to co- Pious eyacuations, Or to the generat e sedis of plenitiad C. Ι in sicli constitutions, the eVaCUations arenot very Considerabie, their health is osten intaterrupted, either by frequent inflammations of the tonsiis, and Other glandular paris, or theyliave the rheumatism, erysipelas, or the piles ; ifin these habiis the Menses cease very suddenly, they are either exposed to the complainis above

mentioned, more frequently, and to a more violent degree, or to repeated and excessive flood-ings. A litile attention to these circumstances

will osten poliat out the means of effectuat pre-

vention. But is it does happen, it Rems muchmore prudent to restrain the flux by gentie laxatives, Cooling medicines, rest, anodynes, a most sparing diet, and this not too liquid, than by very copious biee ling, and astringenis of any hind. There is another kind of habit to whicli su chimmoderate dis charges are too familiar ; to per sons of very irritable constitutions, and at thesame time not remari ably plethoric. Is in such constitutions the Menses go Osr very suddenly, ithappens s metimes that the impetus of the bloodon the uterine system produces a violent hemor rhage, that enseebles extremely at the time, an l,

as it increasses the irritability of that part of the system in particular, subjects the patient to Very

frequent and expensave relapses. In these cases, bleeding Would undoubtedlyincreasse the dis easse. Medicines that allay irritation, anodynes, quiet, a moderate cordial, aswine, and a light nutritive diei, at once talie offitie cause, and enable the patient to support theexpence with the lessi dissiculty. It has happened that a regular intermittent hasbeen attended with a regular and immoderate flux. In seasons When autumnal intermittents are frequent, such circumstances Will now and

then happen to patients Who have suffered considerable lossi about the time of cessation. Insuch cases the barii, gi ven with the fame freedonias in curing the agiae, fas ely cures both the fluxand the intermittent. Vo L. II.

Sometimes these immoderate fluxes proceed frona sonae irritating cause resident in the laterias, Or the Paris contiguous to it. And amongst these none is more common, than that depositionos acrimony whicli precedes a Cancer of the

In such cases the mos apposite remedies areosten ineflectual. The flux is attended with pain and heat dariing acrossi the pubes, frona hip tohip, and down to the middie of the thigh. Large clois of blood are frequently dis charged, that give exquisite pain in passing, and at the fame time the flux is increassed by the stimulus. It is not uncommon in such cases to see thebarii administered very freely, and I am astaldio no good purposse. Indeed it requires theliand of a master to give this medicine properi yin uteri ne dis charges. In cases of plenitude it is injurious; it seems to be so likewise in this casejust described. In such as proceed frona mere debility and relaxation, it may stand a muchbetter chance of being useful ; but it is to beseared, that incipient schirrhous and other obstructions have been much aggravated, by the injudiciolis exhibition to restrain a dis charge, whicli depended on causes not in the poWer of this great medicine to subdue.

casons, and to sonae of whicli there are very juit objections. An opinion generalty prevatis among the sex, that purgatives are particularly necessary at this Juncture; and is assented to by the generality of praetitioners, who, had they made a proper choice, would have acted more prudently. But is we reflect a litile ui on the known ef sedis of this drug, in ali iis preparations, We shallfind it almos uniformiy producing the piles, is talien long together, and in considerable doses. Frona iis effect in stimulating the hemorrhoidalveins and contiguous paris, it has long been adopted as the basis of mos medicines exhibite twith a view to promote the menstruat discliargein young semales, Where it does not appear atthe usual time, or in a proper quantity, and of ten with successi. It casa scarcely thera be rational to give that medicine, whicli is found tobe essicaciotas, frona iis power of irritating the hemorrhoidal and contiguous vesteis, and feterin mining the blood with a diae degree of force onthe uterus, to produce the Menses, at a time hen we are endeaVoUring to abate this impetus, rather than increasse it: in sinori, it seems hight y absurd to make use of those medicines When the Menses are about to cease, and ought so to do,

There are many persons, it is true, Who Cannot eastly bear the more Cooling PHrgatives; very tender delicate habits are mostly affected by them: but it is not dissiculi to contrive Ca thartics, netther heating like the aloes, and othergiam my resinOUS medicines, nor yet Chil ling asthe salts. It will be os more essicacy in curing os complaints arising from the causes We are treating OLto contrive sonae easy method es preventing cos

Comes at the proper time, and in due quantity, the patient in the mean time perceiVing no in- Conveniency, no perceptions os declining health, suffers it to keep iis Course, without attemptingio restrain it. Should the health in generat suffer by it, the sanae means that succeed in lesieningimmoderate dis charges, imay properly be applied

in this case.

When the Menses are about to go olf, for themost part they appear irregularly, both in timeand quantity ; once in a forini glit, three, sive, orsix weelis, s metimes very sparingly, at othertimes in immoderate quantities. Great losses of this hind are osten prevented by taking away four or sive ounces of blood, a few days after the first menstruat suppression. This prevenis the accumulated blood from rusta ing with force iapon the Uterine vesseis at theensuing period, and producing pain or a too Copiolas hemorrhage .. By degrees the occasion forsu cli artificiat evacuation diminimes, and the patient's health becomes firmiy establimed. An opinion in favour of issues at this periodos lise, has occupied the minds of many patienis; some with the liopes of preventing ali future eviis capable of proceeding from this cause; others With the terror os carrying about with them soriise a drain whicli they think of with extremedi ust. Perhaps the use of these ouileis deserves seme consideration. When a patient has in early 1ise been subject to culaneous eruptions, sere

It is necesiary to et oin, in many cases, a most stri Jh attention to diei and exercise, to the fulland plethoric es pecially. A Woman ei oying Very good health, some- times is seiged with a total suppresion of the Menses, much s oner than they ought to dis appear, perhaps s On after thirty years of age.
