In the course of collection and eXamining of mites, Phoretio On arthrO-ΡOdS and especialty on insecis, One usu atly finiis hypopi representing mainlythe families Acaridae and Anoetidae. The common characteristic os the hypopiis that their majority distinctly represent the specieS in queStion, hec auSethe Severat Stages are unknown or listed under another Specific name. The cause of this extraordinary problem lies in the rarity of the fortuitous casewhen ali devel Opmental Stages Occur together at the time os collecting. The imagos either te ad a hidden life Or have a very Shori life Span, and thus theycannot be obta ined by the knoMn or applied collecting method 8; to demonstrate that ali developinental Stages represent a Single Species laboratorybre edings are nee led. This, however, is either very dissiculi or un asible besides the faci that in the case os muscum materiais it is also impossitile.
The identification os the avallabie hypopi cannot be avoided, and thus I set myself the task, hesides the serial publication os new faunistical, taxo nomical and systematical discoveries pertaining to the materials at hanil, the revision of ali known species, sollOwed by the construction Os a Ley to ali taxa and finalty by a monographic treaiment of the hypopi of these two families. This is ali the more necessary hecause in the wake of the earlier Summaries ZACHVATRIN, I93T; TURK and TURΚ, 195T; SCHEUCHER, I95T; IIUGIIES and JACΚSON, 1958), the number Os knoMn taxa has at least beendoubled. Also, and with speciat regarii to the lalter family, the circumStaneeS
