Ricevo due gratissime di vostra signoria illustrissima de 14 e 24 di Febraro passato, alle quali mi so lectio di rispondere colla presente. The Barberini collection os manuscripis now housed in the Vatican Library once formed part of the private library of the Barberini familyat Rome which gave a Pope and four cardinals to the Church in theseventeenth century. The nucleus of the library consisted os literarytreasures gathered by Masseo Barberint, after ards Pope Urban VIII, hut iis real founder was his nephew, FranciS Barberini, who was madecardinat in 1623. The value of the library was greatly enhanced by the addition, in 1672, of ali the codices of Cardinat Anthony Barberini. Besides the manuscriptS, Which numbered about IO,Ooo, the libraryboasted os a collection os about 5o,ooo printed books. Norks dealingwith almost every branch of science and literature found their way intothis vast collection, and in the courSe of the Seventeenth century the great bulk of the correspondence of the Secretariate of State during the
In I 889 the male line of the Barberini-Colonna di Sciarra fataly hecame extinci, and not many years later Cardinal Ehrte, Prefect of the Vatican Library, was approached by a representative of the fataly with an offerto seli the whole collection os manuscriptS and printed books to the Vatican. The Barberini collection os manuscripis is divided into three sections Barberini latini, Barberini graci, and Barberini orientali. Belare thecollection came into the custody of the Vatican a Series of inventories and alphabetical indexes covering the whole had been compiled by thelast two librarians who had charge of the collection while it was stili in the possession of the Barberini fataly. Both of those librarians had
the fame name Pieratisi. The inventories and indexes for the volumes in the Barberini latini are divided into two sections Vols. Ι-6 38 are covered by 22 Vols. of inventories and 44 vols. Os an alphabetical index, and Vols. 6559-98o7 have a Separate inventory of Ι3 vols. and an alphabetical index of II VolS. In November 195I I was commissioned by Dr. Hayes, Director of the National Library, to carry out a search for material of Irish interest in the volumes of the Barberini latini manuscript8. The question ofworking through the Io,ooo odd volumes which comprised the collection had, of course, to he ruted oui, as such a task would be well-nighimpossibie. The only solution was to rely on the inventories and indexes, although these are not entirely satisfactory. Hence, Ι first went through the 35 Volumes of inventories, and noted any volumes of the originalcollection cited in them as containing Iristi materiat, or volumes which, though not specificatly mentioned as having matter relating to Ireland, might, hecause of the nature of their contenis, be considered likely tocontain Such documents. Needless to Say, any Volumes cited in the inventorieS as containing matter concerning England or Scotland orplaces Oinside Ireland with which Irishmen had associations, were invariably noted for examination. In this way I listed about 58o volumes which actualty contained, or might contain, material about Ireland or Irishmen. When I had finished with the inventories, I hegan an eXamination of the 59 volumes of the alphabetical index, but, on completinga perusal of the first 14 volumes, Ι decided not to proceed with the examination of the remaining 45 as I found that any volumes of the original collection noted down by me for examination hom the 14 volumes of the index had atready been listed by me for scrutiny Dom the inventories, and I concluded that it would be a waste os time to proceed further withthe examination of the index. Therefore I began to examine in detest the 58o volumes listed from the inventories . Except for a Smali proportion of these volumes which happened to be provided with a rather truStworthy index, the examination of each volume was done page bypage. The work was completed in Iuly 1952, and the materiai relatingto Ireland which has been found in these volumes is now on microfilmin the National Library, Midare St., Dublin. Only one or two of the documents which have been microfilmed are

in Englisti ; most of them are written in Italian, hut quite a number arein French, Latin or Spanish. For the convenience of scholars, who at some future date might he inclined to pursue stili further the quest for Iristi material in the Barberini latini collection, I append a list os ali thevolumes examined by me irrespective of the fact whether they contain matter about Ireland or not. I Dei confident, however, that the collection will yield very litile, is anything, of importance relating to Ireland which will not be found on the microfilms in the National Library.
