Τhis very accurate dissection throws muchsight on the nature of the distase; and thoughperhaps it may not assist us in curing it, yet willenable physicians to give suci, assistance and ad-Vice, as may Contribute much to the cure of suchas are amicted with this malady, and promote thecontinuance of their existence. The state of the paris abolit the heari fullysteWs, that Under such circumstances it is impossibie to bear with impunity the essedis of sud den and violent agitations, whether they arisiesrom gusts of paction, or suddenly accelerated

muscular motion.

To proposse suci, a Lind of diei as may be themost lihely to prevent .such irritabili ty ; to re- commend likewise attention to quantity; to beparticularly abstemious in respeet to every thinglieating, spices, spiriis, Wines, and ali sermented liquors ; to guard most scrupulousty against

Passion, or any Vehement emotions; and to malleuse of ali the usual means of establis hing and preserVing generat health. To mitigate excesses of irritability, by anodynes; or patias, is they quicken the circulation; to disperse flatulencies when they distend the stomach, by moderate doses of carminatives, amongst Whicli, perhaps, simple peppermini-water may be one of the fas est; wili perhaps bethe means os continuing many a valvabie lis e tollis family. OBSERVATION S ou DI SORDERS

Gentiemen,

I PI AV E met mitti divers instances of persons

employed in patiating With Water colours, Whohave been violently assii fled With that diseasse, whicli is so generalty known by the name of colica Pisonum, or the dry belly-ach; and whohave been seiged with that train os sympionis v hicli usu atly attends this diseasse, and even withthat species of parabsis Whicli is osten the com panion of the most violent and advanced stages of it. As sonae of the sirst cases that occurred to me happened in autumn, I attributed them to thelisual est edis of the season ; a disposition to bilious disorders in every degree.

Reflecting on these cases, I found that severas of the instances I had met with, who were so

affected, both men and women, employed them selves in patia ting With Water-coloUrs ; and were likewise studious, and eminent in the respective branches of their profession. This led me to conssider their occiapation more attentively, in order to discover, is possibie, thecause of these complainis, and the means of pre- venting or curing them Willi more certainty and expedition. The pigments they mahe use of are, for themost pari, prepared from minerais, and many of them os a polsonous nature: white lead, red lead, vermilion, Verdigrise, orpiment, calcined smelis, and other substances of a deleterious Lind, formille basis of most of their Colours. It is not an unus at thing, nay, it is too frequently the practice of many of these artists, whilst they are studying their subject, to have the potnt of the pencit between their lips, and whilst they are fastion ing it to their purpose, are insensibiy swallowing, though in a stow unheededmanner, the noxious particles of minerat pot-

sons, whose effecis mill be proportioned to thequantity thus inscnsibly tinen in, and the deli cacy os the constitution. It is seldom that therobust apply themselves to this sedentary Occupation.

At tengili me had a violent putrid sever, at tended with the most singular appearances I evermet with ; one of Which Was, a kind of desipientia that continued for weeks after the sever test her, with total losse of speech; insomuch that when me had recovered her faculties so far as to knowher Wanis, sae Was long Unable to express thembut by writing. To this was added a most exquisite patia in the soles of her feet, sor many weelis, whicli prevented ali exercisse, and thereby

This and some other instances that happenedabout the sanae time, to persons in the sanae occupation, induced me to thinii these dis orders were principalty owing to their Mallowing, without thinking of the consequence, so much of the deleterious colours, as th0se unavoidablymust

In consequence of these reflections, I have de stred such artists as Ι have been ac quainted with, to find sonae other means of performing this Operation ; as the colours, being many of themos a polsonous quality, Would, sooner Or later, subject them to Very grievous sufferings, and perhaps, in time, to the total lossi of the use of their handS. I do not presume to proposse any better method of curing this diseasse, than that whicli hasbeen proposed by the writers on the colica Picto

and the public. I mentioned that the patient, whose case Ιbriefly described, sumered greatly frona a severeand un remitting patia in the soles of her feet, after the sever had tesse her. I thought myselfhappy that I had directed no applications to bemade to the Dei, netther blisters, Wario plasters, nor cataplastas, thoia gli the nature of her complainis osten induced me to consider how far

It is certain, however, that many of the pigments are of an arsenical origin, that others are preparations os lead and copper, ali of them noxious in a high degree, and neVer fati to produce the wors: of ConseqUences, when they are received in to the Vo L. It is almost the constant companion os dram-drini ing, and in momenes pecially. Having met with it in mo many instances of this kinit, it affords me but too justapprehensions of the nature of the mal ady, Whena constant burning heat in the soles of the feet malles a part of the patient's complainis.

It is not improbabie but that many distases affecting Very young children, may be ascribedio a cause whicli I am obliged to Dr. Heberdensor suggesting to me. Many of their play-things
