Tinctures cata be kept unchanged sor a great tength of time, and there re a rd a convenient form for the exhibition of those substances Whicli the menstruum has the power of dissolving. These are mostly active Paris of vegetabies, anil, in some instances, saline substances alSo, and on account of their convenience they form a large proportion of the preparations os pharmacy. There are feW instances in whichthey are given alone, and attention is to be paid to the vehiclein whicli they are administered, that they be not precipitaledor decomposed thereby. The heat to whicli they are ex- posed during their preparation ought not to exceed 80', athichthe vesset, in Whicli they are preparin g, can be kept stOP-ped without hinard. Iiecti sed spirit is set dona used fortheir preparation, but for the most part the proos or diluted spirit, in producing the effect of whicli, the water acis as veli as the alcohol, and both together extraci more effectu- atly the viriues of the drug.
