Tinctures can be hept unchanged sor a great tength of time, and there re afford a convenient form for the exhibition of those substances whicli the menstruum has the poWeros dissolving, the effecis of Whicli are, however, to be CODSidered in their administration, as weli as those of the substance dissolved, and the doses to be modis ed accordirigly. Theseare mostly active paris of vegetabies, and in Some instances, saline substances also, and on account of their conveniencethey form a large proportion of the preparations os pharma-cy. There are feW instances in Whicli they are given alone, and attention is to be paid to the vehicle in Whicli they are administered, that they be not precipitated or decomposed thereby. The heat to whicti they are exposed during their Preparation Ought not to exceed 80', at whicli the vesset, in Whicli they are preparing, can be kept stopped Without haetard; unless it is otherwise directed, and in severat instances a sonaeWhat higher temperature appears practicatly to berequisite. Rectisted spirit is seldom necessary or used for

their preparation, but for the most part the proos or diluted spirit, in producing the effect of Whicli, the water acis asweli as the alcohol, and both together extraci more effectu- atly the viriues of the drug. Ιt has been Dund that a fort-night's maceration is amply suffcient for the agency of the menstruum ; this time is there re usualty taken, and adopted here; after it, the clear tincture is to be silteredthrough paper, and kept for use, and it should not be allowedto stand upon iis ingredients in the botile untii the whole is used, as is stili the practice in some Shops. When tincturesare made with rectis ed spirit they usualty precipitate on the addition of water. The influence of a quantity of alcoholtaken into the stomach is definite and stimulating, and against this effect of the menstruum the greater part of the matters dissolved in it cloes not militate; in some instances, hoWeVer, the action of the menstruum is a secondary consideration, compared to iis solvent poWers over particular articles, and itis then employed for the purpose of dissolving substances of indications contrary to iis oWn POWers.

It contains nearly two grains os optum in ono fluidounce of the tincture.
