"Sed inde de fluvio musicae suavis nutricula leni crepitu dulcis aurae divinitus inspirata sic vaticinatur arundo viridis:" (Apuleius, Metamorphoses, book 6 1:92)
(아풀레이우스, 변신, 6권 1:92)
neve peregrinis tantum defendar ab armis, et Romanus habet multa iocosa liber, utque suo Martem cecinit gravis Ennius ore - Ennius ingenio maximus, arte rudis - explicat ut causas rapidi Lucretius ignis, casurumque triplex vaticinatur opus, sic sua lascivo cantata est saepe Catullo femina, cui falsum Lesbia nomen erat; (P. Ovidius Naso, Tristia, book 2, poem 1 1:195)
(푸블리우스 오비디우스 나소, 슬픔, 2권, 1:195)
et quod fuerit coniunx, Idem noster vaticinatur in quarto; (Dantes Aligherius, De monarchia, Liber Secundus 8:4)
(단테 알리기에리, , 8:4)
Huiusmodi igitur statum imperatori in transitu vaticinatur. (Macrobii Saturnalia, Liber III, VII. 2:5)
(, , 2:5)
1. Divinare denotes foreseeing by divine inspiration and supernatural aid, like μαντεύεσθαι; præsagire (præ and ἡγεῖσθαι), in a natural way, by means of a peculiar organization of mind bordering on the supernatural; præsentire and prævidere, by an unusual measure of natural talent; præsentire, by immediate presentiment; prævidere, by foresight, by an acute and happy combination. 2. Divinare, etc., are merely acts of perception, whereas vaticinatio and prædictio, the open expression of what is foreseen; vaticinatio, that of the divinans and præsagiens, like προφητεία, prophecy; but prædictio, that of the præsentiens and prævidens, prediction. (vi. 105.)
Hariolari (from χρᾶν) means to foretell, with the accessory notion of charlatanism, like χρησμολογεῖν; whereas vaticinari (from vates, ἠχέτης,) to foretell, with the accessory notion of inspiration, like μαντεύεσθαι. In Cic. Divin. i. 2, Hariolorum et vatum furibundæ prædictiones, it is only the harioli, who from their position and in public estimation already pass for charlatans; whereas the vates are charlatans only, as Cicero himself views them from his philosophical elevation. (iii. 76.)
