1. Metiri means to measure a space in order to know its magnitude; whereas metari, to mark the boundaries of the space that has been measured, that they may be known to others. 2. By dimetiri and dimetari, the measuring and marking out of sub-divisions is especially meant; wherefore metari castra refers merely to the whole circumference of the entrenchments; when, therefore, Liv. viii. 38. uses the phrase locum castris dimetari, it is evident of itself that he expressly means, to mark the boundaries of the principia and of the prætorium, etc., that are within the camp. (ii. 169.)
